Dear Bird is the second solo show by the artist that took place in Bebek Cistern, a cavernous space excavated for water in the past, and has a unique resonance inside. Dear Bird consists of three woven webs of aluminum chains and an illuminated resin stomach sculpture that hangs from the ceiling. The three interconnected web chains represent the artist, her mother, and her grandmother connected through a woman’s inheritance. The sound part of the work is in Turkish, recorded with the improvisational artist Sumru Ağıryürüyen, where she took the place of the artist through her voice. The story between the generations is told through a bird’s eye, who is stuck between the traditions that are forced on it and the desire to feel free and independent. As the story progresses, the voice of the bird, the voices of its family, and the exterior mix to one another. The piece ends as the bird says, “I don’t feel anymore.”
