Synthetic Genesis
(metal, epoxy, chewing gum)

In this sculpture, the DNA helix, the molecule that carries the genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism, is constructed from a metal sheet with square cutouts. Inside these square cut-outs are gummies with traces of my DNA embedded in transparent epoxy resin cubes. The epoxy resin has protected these gummies, deeply connected to my body and identity, against time.
Chewing gum is a synthetically produced food consisting of flavorings, sweeteners and preservatives. Chewing it as a repetitive act under stress has become a habit that helps me cope when I can't make sense of or control my emotions. When I chewed a pack of watermelon-flavored gum, I experienced the brief and temporary pleasure of the gum simulating watermelon. I saved the chewed gum for three years.
Our biological essence and natural processes are more intertwined with these artificial (or man-made) external factors than ever before. Synthetic Origin is about this mutual shaping.
This work reflects on how our identities and DNA are not fixed, but constantly redefined and reshaped by cultural and technological advances. It invites the viewer to reflect on how the man-made developments represented by the chewing gum affect our identities, habits and fears, and offers a glimpse into the future as they are inextricably linked to our existence.
